Smelly:Hands

I love the taste of a hamburger with a thick slice of red onion.  But I hate it when I have to slice the onion myself.  That's because everytime I do that, my hands smell like onions for the better part of the next 24 hours.  I also get smelly hands when I'm cooking fajitas and have to cut up some limes.  That's much more pleasant.

I was thinking about how I could relate that to my spiritual life.  Whatever you're holding onto, when you let go you're going to smell like it.  That's real spiritual... er, uh, yeah.  Okay, if you're holding on to Jesus, you're going to start to smell like him.  In the first couple of verses of Ephesians 5, Paul says that Jesus offered himself up as a "fragrant sacrifice to God".  It also says in the same sentence, be imitators of God.

Do I smell like Jesus, or do I smell like sin?

You see, if you're holding onto sin, you're going to start to smell like sin.  I imagine sin smells more like onions.  And maybe Jesus smells like limes.

Okay, that's totally stupid.  Jesus probably doesn't smell like limes.  And I hope he doesn't smell like onions.  Anyway, if you don't want to imitate something, leave it alone.  Don't want to smell like sin, leave it alone.  Don't want to smell like Jesus, ignore him.

Of course you want to smell like Jesus don't you?  Or at least be like him, imitate him.  So hold on to Jesus.

And yes, Neil Diamond ROCKS!

Wedding:Bells

Destin and Jamie finally got married today.  The wedding was killer.  For all you ladies, that's a guy way of saying it was perfect.  But if said "the wedding was perfect", that would sound very un-manly.  So it was killer.  Wicked-awesome even, in a godly way of course.

Okay, I'm ruining it.  It was wonderful to see Jamie so beautiful and Destin getting all choked up, and Brian handing over his daughter to Destin.  It certainly made me shiver for a minute as I thought about someday having to give away Molly.  I sure hope she doesn't settle for any less than a Destin.  I'd be happy if she married someone like him.  Even more, I hope Molly grows up to be a godly woman like Jamie.

Well, I'm sure Destin and Jamie are having a great time.  Ewwww.

Never:Forget

Warning: There is a strong possibility that you'll be crying in less than 60 seconds.

In lieu of the recent major motion picture attention, this 60 second tv ad is enough to remind me...

Beach:Bum

We went to the beach today with Mike & Karla.  True fun!  I think I'll always truly be a beach bum at heart.  The smell of salt, water, and electricity always calm me down and make me feel about a thousand times better.  Sand in my toes, water washing up my leg, seagulls swooping, it's all ethereal.  I think I'm gonna go live on the beach and be the youth minister at FBC (First Beach Church).

I think Jesus was a little bit of a beach bum too.  He hung around fisherman, regulary spent time out in boats, and seemed to be more calmed than scared by big ocean storms.  I guess now I'm in the same spectrum as those guys that build cabinets to "be closer to The Carpenter".  I don't care.

I think Jesus and I could have some quality time together out on the beach, just hanging out, listening to the surf.  We could talk about how I don't miss the stress of life on the mainland.  We could grill some shark steaks and gulf shrimp over the campfire.  He could indulge me in the secrets of walking on water, and we could swap stories about pharisess and saducees.

Of course I'm being somewhat tongue-in-cheek here.  I guess when he called us to be 'fishers of men' he wasn't really talking about fishing or being on the beach.  We've got to be out in the world to be fishers of men.  So I probably won't get to be youth minister at FBC (First Beach Church) anytime soon.  But I can go there sometimes to get away and just be thankful he's made these kind of places for us to catch a break and get refreshed.  In the immortal words of the Beach Boys, "Wouldn't it be nice..."

ps: notice on the Pet Sounds album cover, the Beach Boys are feeding what?  That's right - GOATS!!!  Yippee!!!

The:Message

I'm feeling quite bloggy tonight.  Particularly because of 2 reasons:
  1. I realized it had been too long since I last blogged.
  2. In catching up on the blogs of my peeps, I realized 2 more things:
  1. I miss some faces who haven't been around (yes, that means you).
  2. Some people are misguided by internal frustration toward others  (that doesn't necessarily mean you) and need to engage in peaceful discussion and edification, not hapless lashings and stabs.
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."
-Albert Einstein

I love you guys.
